Prepare for an Online Doctor Consult: A 2-Minute Singapore Checklist

Patient getting ready for an online doctor consultation in Singapore
Two minutes of preparation can leave more consultation time for decisions and questions.

An online doctor consult is short by design, so preparation matters. You do not need a home clinic or a long medical report. In most cases, two focused minutes are enough to collect the details the doctor will ask for.

Use this checklist before your video call begins.

Minute 1: write down the medical story

Open a note on your phone and record five points:

  1. Start: When did the problem begin?
  2. Change: Is it improving, worsening or staying the same?
  3. Severity: What stops you from doing your usual work, sleep, eating or drinking?
  4. What you tried: List medicine, home remedies and doses where known.
  5. Warning signs: Note breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, severe pain, confusion, bleeding, dehydration or rapid deterioration.

Concrete information is more useful than labels. Instead of “high fever”, share the measured temperature and time. Instead of “bad diarrhoea”, estimate the number of episodes and whether you can keep fluids down.

Minute 2: put the essentials within reach

Prepare:

  • The identification or Singpass details requested at registration
  • Your regular medication list and known drug allergies
  • Relevant home readings you already have
  • Clear photos of a visible symptom
  • Your preferred Singapore delivery address if medicine may be needed
  • A short list of questions for the doctor

If another person is helping a child, older adult or someone who has difficulty communicating, have that helper stay nearby for the call.

Which readings help?

Only collect readings that relate to the problem and can be measured safely. Examples include:

  • Temperature for fever or infection symptoms
  • Blood pressure and pulse for dizziness or a blood-pressure review
  • Glucose for a patient with diabetes when relevant
  • Oxygen saturation for respiratory symptoms if you already own a reliable pulse oximeter
  • Current weight when medicine dosing may depend on it

Do not delay emergency care to search for a device. A number is also not a substitute for how the patient looks and feels.

How to take useful skin or wound photos

Take one image close enough to show detail and another that shows where the problem sits on the body. Use daylight or bright neutral light, turn off filters and keep the camera steady. A ruler or familiar object can show size without touching a painful area.

Avoid sending intimate images through an informal channel. Ask the clinic how to share sensitive medical information securely.

Set up the call itself

Choose a private, quiet space with light facing you. Check that the browser has camera and microphone permission, and keep the phone charged. Use Wi-Fi or a stable mobile connection.

Wear clothing that lets you show the relevant non-intimate area if needed. Do not join while driving. If you are outside Singapore, tell the doctor because local prescriptions, delivery and escalation options may differ.

Be clear about what you need

It is reasonable to say, “I need advice about these symptoms,” “I am worried about whether I can work,” or “I want to discuss a refill.” That helps the doctor address your goal.

The requested outcome may still be clinically unsuitable. An MC, prescription or referral follows the assessment; it is not confirmed by asking for it.

Know when not to wait for the call

Severe breathlessness, chest pain, stroke-like symptoms, collapse, seizures, uncontrolled bleeding, major injury, confusion or rapid deterioration require urgent care. Use our teleconsult or clinic guide for less urgent decisions.

Frequently asked questions

What identification should I prepare for an online doctor consult?

Have the official identification or Singpass details requested during registration. Accurate identity information is important if the doctor later issues a prescription, referral or medical certificate.

Which home readings are useful for a teleconsult?

Use relevant devices you already have, such as a thermometer or blood pressure monitor. Do not delay urgent care or buy equipment solely for a routine consult.

Can I show a rash over video?

Often yes. Take an unfiltered close-up and a wider photo in good light, but the doctor may still advise in-person examination if the appearance or symptoms are concerning.
